An electrical outlet with an espresso machine plugged in caught fire at Kaladi Brothers Coffee in the Social Sciences Building on Friday, Aug. 30.

Customers were unable to order espresso-based beverages due to the malfunction.

A Kaladi Brothers worker said the fire smelled like burning hair and plastic.

Another worker at the coffee shop, Emily Schneider, said the outlet began to emit smoke and caught fire.

Schneider said smoke from the fire hovered above the fridge.

The incident took place as students attended classes and populated campus during the first week of the semester.

Kaladi Brothers workers notified customers that tea beverages, drip coffee and packaged beverages were still available.

Schneider said the espresso machine was back up and running by 2:30 p.m.
