Head coach Ryan McCarthy announced on May 18 that UAA women’s basketball will represent Alaska at Taiwan’s annual Buddha's Light International Association Cup University Basketball Tournament. The tournament is scheduled to be held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan from August 2 to 7.

The event features college basketball teams from across the world competing in a tournament-style format. It promotes basketball and exposes young athletes to large-scale competition.

The Seawolves attended the tournament in 2018, posting a 4-2 record and finishing third overall. The team competed against universities from Japan, France, Canada, mainland China and Taiwan.

“We are excited to represent the United States, the state of Alaska and our institution again at the BLIA Cup in Taiwan,” McCarthy told associate media relations director Nate Sagan.

“It was a transformational experience for our group in 2018, and with so many new faces this next year, I anticipate making a huge leap in terms of team growth.  From the cultural experience to the high level of competition, I'm excited to see how this group comes together and grows with one another as we prepare for a fun, yet challenging trip.”

The trip will be funded by the team and UAA’s athletic department. To donate, visit crowdfund.alaska.edu/project/37471 or contact UAA athletics senior development officer Travis Parrish at 907-786-4670 or tlparrish@alaska.edu.
