Fraternity and Sorority Life hosts Greek Week every year as a week-long event full of competitions, games and philanthropy events.
The Northern Light spoke with each of the fraternities and sororities on campus about Greek Week’s upcoming events.
Sicily Wheeles and Anika Beighle from the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority said all the organizations gathered together on March 31 to make banners representing their fraternity or sorority. The banners can be seen in the Student Union.
April 1 was philanthropy day, and both sororities and the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, known as TKE, participated in “the March of Dimes.” They had tables and collected spare change from anyone passing by. Each cent was donated to their philanthropies.
Other games, social events and competitions were hosted throughout the week. Many of the fraternity and sorority life members seemed most excited for the Greek Olympics on April 5 held at the AVIS Alaska Sports Complex.
Some games to expect at the Greek Olympics are a basketball shootout and tug-of-war.
TKE Vice President Jackson Himmelstein told The Northern Light how TKE, Tri Sigma or ASP could win Greek Week competitions.
He said that every task offered a certain number of points, and the fraternity or sorority that had the most at the end of the week would be rewarded with a ceremonial hammer.
The hammer is passed on each year from winner to winner, and covered in previous winners’ signatures. One hammer is kept in the Student Organizational Services office, as it has too many signatures to be used again. A new hammer has been crafted to be passed down.
According to Owen Ford, TKE’s president, Tau Kappa Epsilon has taken the hammer home for three years in a row.
Ce’Anika Palacios and Emily Hufford from Alpha Sigma Alpha explained that certain fraternities and sororities had an advantage over others because of their size.
The tug-of-war competition, for example, will be easier for whoever has more brothers or sisters on their team.
For the team-based games like the basketball shootout, they would have an equal number of players on each team. There will also be several mini-games to play.
On April 6, Greek life will have a private ceremony for the Champion of Greek Week. The ceremony counts the fraternity and sorority points and the hammer is presented to the winner. There are individual awards for chapter president and new member awards.
Alpha Sigma Phi will not be participating in Greek Week this year. Member Kekoa Burley explained they have lost primary members, such as their president, due to personal challenges.
Their new president, Malachy Cummings, is working to keep the fraternity in shape.
