The Career Services Center is one of many programs available to help students grow here at UAA. Located on the first floor of the Student Union, this may be your next stop if you are close to graduating or simply concerned about your career path after school.

In an interview with The Northern Light, Career Development Coordinator Mike Detmer explained what career services can do to provide students with the opportunity to excel in their transition to the workforce. Detmer said “We give students the resources that they need, so that they can be the best possible advocate for themselves.”

Career Services provides services including job application reviews, help with resumes and cover letters, portfolio preparation and mock interviews that help prepare students for the real thing.

Another major benefit of paying Career Services a visit is the Seawolf Career Closet – a free resource for students that allows them to take home one free professional outfit per semester. That is four items including – but not limited to – shoes, shirts, jackets, bags, dresses and pants.

In order to access the Seawolf Career Closet, a student simply needs to set up an appointment withCareer Services. During their appointment students can try on clothes and pick out what works best for them. Most clothes are provided via donation and are dry cleaned by Fireweed Cleaners.

Career Services also provides students with a Handshake account, which Detmer said is “a very useful career development platform.” Handshake functions similar to other platforms like Indeed or LinkedIn, but is entirely free for students and only requires your student login to get set up.
